Campaign against Illegal Spring Hunting in Greece

Bonn 27 May 2013 - The Greek BirdLife partner, the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS), has launched an ambitious crowd-funding campaign for activities targeting illegal spring hunting of migratory birds in Greece. The campaign is part of a larger project to reduce illegal killing of protected wild birds in Italy, Greece and Spain. The HOS campaign will focus on changing cultural attitudes towards illegal hunting in Greece – particularly on the Greek Ionian islands which are the first stop-over site for many birds after crossing the Mediterranean Sea from Africa during their spring migration. Unfortunately there, illegal spring hunting still takes place and a large number of migratory birds are killed each year.

The Hellenic Ornithological Society is the lead partner in the EU LIFE+ project “Safeguarding the Lesser White-fronted Goose Along the European Flyway” of which the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat is also a beneficiary.
