AEWA Technical Committee Meets in Bonn

The 15th Meeting of the AEWA Technical Committee is scheduled to take place in Bonn 9-11 April, the first time since last year’s 7th Session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP7) in Durban, South Africa. As well as taking reports form the Secretariat and Regional Representatives, the Technical Committee will be electing its officers for the period 2019-2021, including a replacement for the outgoing Chair, Dr Saulius Svazas of Lithuania, who stepped down at MOP7 after concluding his two terms as member of the Committee.

In Memoriam: Lew Young, Chief Executive of EAAFP

The staff at the AEWA Secretariat were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Lew Young, the Chief Executive of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP). Lew, who was 60 years old, died yesterday of a heart attack while attending a meeting in Beijing. Lew was a passionate conservationist and a good ally to both AEWA and CMS and he was a strong advocate of the EAAFP participating fully in the World Migratory Bird Day campaign. He will be sorely missed.

IX International Spoonbill Workshop

The outcomes of the IX International Spoonbill Workshop organized by the AEWA Eurasian Spoonbill International Expert Group (AEWA ESIEG) are now available on the AEWA website. The workshop took place in Djerba, Tunisia from 14 to 18 November 2018 and was made possible through the dedication of of the Tunisian BirdLife partner, l’Association des Amis des Oiseaux and the Tour du Valat.

Inger Andersen Appointed as UNEP Executive Director

Inger Andersen of Denmark is the new Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme. Her nomination to the post by UN Secretary-General António Guterres was approved by acclamation by the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, 20 February.

Serbia Accedes to AEWA as Party No. 79

The Republic of Serbia will become AEWA’s 79th Party as of 1 March 2019.

The UNEP/AEWA Secretariat is pleased to announce the accession of the Republic of Serbia as AEWA’s 79th Party with the country’s membership of the Agreement taking effect on 1 March. Serbia is a landlocked country in the Balkans peninsula, and its capital is Belgrade. The country’s terrain is characterized by its location in the Balkan Mountains and on the Pannonian and Wallachian Plains.

The Secretariat of the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (UNEP/AEWA) is pleased to announce the call for applications for a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop on the Flyway Approach to the Conservation and Wise Use of Waterbirds and Wetlands, scheduled to take place from 6 to 10 May 2019 in Cotonou, Benin, at the kind invitation of the Government of Benin.

Tomorrow is World Wetlands Day, organized as ever by the Ramsar Convention and this year being conducted under the slogan “we are not powerless against climate change”. Wetlands are not only important as waterbird habitat, which explains why AEWA and Ramsar work so closely together, but their natural power can be harnessed to help in the fight against climate change.

Bradnee Chambers 1966-2019

The AEWA Secretariat was sad to learn that the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), Dr. Bradnee Chambers, passed away on 23 January 2019 in his native Canada after a short illness. This is a tragic loss for the CMS Family and the United Nations. Bradnee became Executive Secretary of CMS in 2013 and led the Convention through the Conferences of the Parties in Quito in 2014 (COP11) and Manila in 2017 (COP12).

The Central African Republic Accedes to AEWA as Party No. 78

The Central African Republic has become AEWA’s 78th Party as of 1 January 2019.

The UNEP/AEWA Secretariat is pleased to announce the accession of the Central African Republic as AEWA’s 78th Party. The country’s membership to the Agreement took effect on 1 January. The Central African Republic is a landlocked country in the heart of the continent bordering with Cameroon, Chad, Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and Sudan. The country has an area of just over 620,000 km2 and a population of 4.6 million (2016 estimates); the capital is Bangui.

On the fifth and closing day of AEWA MOP7 in Durban (Saturday, 8 December 2018), delegates heard final reports from the Chairs of the Credentials Committee and the two Working Groups, the first on Scientific and Technical Matters and the second on Financial and Administrative Matters. Resolutions were adopted on the Aichi Targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Amendments to the AEWA Annexes; Definitions and Interpretation of Terms Used in AEWA Annex 3; Treatment of International Species Action and Management Plans; Conservation of Seabirds; Monitoring of Migratory Waterbirds; Revised Conservation Guidance; Climate-Resilient Flyways; and the Standing and Technical Committees.
