AEWA MOP7 Daily Coverage for Friday, 7 December 2018

On the fourth day of AEWA MOP7 in Durban (Friday, 7 December 2018), delegates enjoyed a day of excursions offered by the host country to a number of exciting destinations located in and around the city of Durban. In the evening following the excursions, delegates were invited to a special Gala Dinner hosted by the Province of Kwazulu-Natal (KZN), which took place in the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

AEWA MOP7 Daily Coverage for Wednesday, 5 December 2018

Discussion of substantive business got under way on the second day of the Seventh Session of the Meeting of Parties to AEWA on Wednesday, 5 December 2018. The first item discussed was the AEWA Strategic Plan 2019-2027, with Parties acknowledging that it contained ambitious objectives and for full implementation more resources would be required. Given current financial constraints, priority should be focused on the most pressing actions.

New Study Predicts that African Waterbirds Will Suffer from Climate Change

A new study launched by Wetlands International and BirdLife International at AEWA MOP7 today, shows that many High Arctic breeding waders and African waterbirds are predicted to suffer more from the impacts of climate change than European birds. The latest climate change models reveal a disconcerting future for waterbirds in Africa, which can only be prevented through unprecedented collaboration across sectors and a strong alliance of countries committed to maintaining a Climate Resilient Network of sites important to waterbirds and people.

AEWA MOP7 Daily Coverage for Tuesday, 4 December 2018

The seventh Meeting of the Parties (MOP7) to the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) opened on Tuesday, 4 December in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, under the theme “Beyond 2020: Shaping Flyway Conservation for the Future”. The meeting was officially opened by Fernando Spina as Chair of AEWA MOP6, who thanked the Government of South Africa and the Municipality of Durban for hosting the meeting.

Conservation Evidence at AEWA MOP7

You may have seen the University of Cambridge/Conservation Evidence stand at AEWA MOP 7 – if you haven’t, do head along and find out more. Conservation Evidence is a project gathering the scientific evidence for how well conservation actions work, from reducing seabird bycatch to legal protection of species and habitats. They are collecting information on the effectiveness of ways to save all species and all habitats everywhere in the world; they estimate that they are about two-thirds of the way there, having already gathered over 5,000 studies.

Today, the Nature Conservation Sector (NCS) of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, Ministry of Environment, was declared the winner of the AEWA Conservation Award. The Conservation Award for the institutional category has been presented at the opening ceremony of the 7th Meeting of the Parties in Durban, South Africa.

Today, Mr. Ohad Hatzofe, Avian Ecologist of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, has been declared the winner of the AEWA Conservation Award. The Conservation Award for the individual category has been presented at a special ceremony on the opening day of the 7th Meeting of the Parties in Durban, South Africa.

British Ornithologist Declared Honorary Patron of UN Waterbird Agreement

Today, David Alan Stroud MBE, Senior Ornithologist at the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, was declared Honorary Patron of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA). David Stroud has been part of the bedrock of AEWA since its inception. He has contributed widely to the development and implementation of the Agreement with involvement across the board in all aspects of its work.

Showcasing Action for AEWA Priority Species: Eurasian Curlew

The AEWA International Singles Species Action Plan for the Conservation of the Eurasian Curlew was published in 2015 and runs until 2025. On breeding grounds across northern Europe, research has identified the main drivers of population decline as low breeding success (through loss of nests and chicks to agricultural practices and predators) alongside the loss, fragmentation and degradation of breeding habitats. The impact of continuing hunting in France could pose a serious additional threat for declining breeding populations.
