Think.Eat.Save! - Today is World Environment Day!

Bonn,
5 June 2013
- Today is World Environment Day (WED)
and it will be celebrated under the theme Think.Eat.Save.
Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign
that encourages you to reduce your foodprint. According
to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every
year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent
to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan
Africa. At the same time, one in every seven people in the
world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under
the age of five die daily from hunger.

Given this enormous imbalance in lifestyles
and the resultant devastating effects on the environment,
this year’s theme – Think.Eat.Save – encourages
people to become more aware of the environmental impact
of the food choices they make and empowers them to make
informed decisions.

World Environment Day is an annual event
that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated
global day for positive environmental action. Activities
take place all year round and climax on 5 June every year.
World Environment Day began in 1972 and has grown to become
one of the main vehicles through which the United Nations
stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages
political attention and action.
